The Spanish Barges

The Spanish Barges are a series  of 4 individual wrecks, 2 of which are believed to have been dumped there in the 1950s during the refurbishment of the jetty. The other two wrecks, which lay further from the shore were sunk in the 1980s as part of Gibraltars artificial reef program.

The depths of the wrecks are:

  • Barge 1: 8m

  • Barge 2: 9m

  • Barge 3: 14m

  • Barge 4: 19m

What can be found on the site:

  • Octopus

  • Cuttlefish

  • Conger and Moray eels

  • Nudibranchs

  • Spider crabs and common lobster

  • Wide range of fish species

Barges 1, 2 and 3 are suitable for PADI Scuba and Open Water certified divers of all experience levels.

However Barge 4, which lies in 19m is more suited to divers certified with an advanced qualification.
